Catching Up on the Photo Meme

Today alphaflyer asked me for a photograph of a childhood toy that I still have and love. This is a case study in how igrockspock lacks the normal range of human emotions. I looked through my whole house and could not find a single toy from my childhood, nor could I remember what sorts of toys I might have saved and put in the attic. Sorry, alphaflyer, I have no photograph for you.

Luckily, nemophilist asked me for things I can provide. Two days ago, she requested a photograph of my favorite historical location. Since I have no favorite historical location in my home city, I substitute the Great Wall of China. When I was there in 2006, I slept in an abandoned guard tower and hiked an unreconstructed section of the wall and hiked to a place that normal tourists went. This was probably illegal, but you could do those kinds of things in pre-Olympics China. It was one of the best things I've ever done in my life.

Two days ago, nemophilist asked me for my favorite natural location. That is Kyrgyzstan. Since there aren't a lot of hotels in the country, you can show up to the Community Tourism office in most towns and asked to be lodged with a local family. Those families often have relatives or friends who spending the summer in mountain pastures with their livestock, and they are usually happy to arrange for you to visit them. My friend and I spent about half of our trip riding horses around those pastures, and it is also one of the best things I've ever done in my life. Photographs don't really capture the immensity of the space.

What wonderful pictures and stories -- thank you for sharing! I can't travel as much as I'd like, so I always enjoy hearing other people's experiences :)
Didn't think my tasking would be impossible ...

But those pictures? Gorgeous. A far more interesting stretch of Wall than the one I walked on with my kidlet.
Wonderful pictures and stories, thank you for sharing. :-)
