uhura: fierce

Just checking in

Hi! I didn't fall off the face of the earth, but I am low on energy and inspiration at the moment. For the first time in a long time, my major writing deadline is not fanfic-related by RL-related. I am applying for a Fulbright grant to spend the summer in Africa, and finishing that by October 9 at 4:30 p.m. is clearly more important than writing Star Trek stories.

I am slowly pecking away at one small genfic, but I'm trying not to think about it overmuch. In the past, I've been very impatient about getting my stories finished and posted, which is one of the last manifestations of my old fear that I might stop writing before I ever finish anything. I think I can safely rid myself of this habit though; it hurts my writing, and I know it's why I wasn't fully satisfied with the last story I posted.

Small point of interest: today I showed my students a picture of Barack Obama as Spock. I asked them what impression the image gave, and they said, "that he's an evil elf lord?" After lengthy deliberation, someone chimed in, "is that Spark from Star Tracks?"
Good luck with your grant! Africa is a grand place. :)

And I am laughing at your students. Spark? I am always making geeky references that hardly any of them get. It is always amusing to see one or two kids' faces light up in recognition as they realize that their teacher is a nerdy as they are.

That's a great moment, isn't it?

(Am not a teacher, am support staff.)
Best wishes for your grant!

The Spark incident made me facepalm, though. Kids these days... ;-)
Best of luck on your grant application--that sounds like a great way to spend a summer!
Good luck with the grant application!

Dare I ask if you eventually got more meaningful responses to Lord Spark Obama of the star elves?
