daredevil: matt

Some things I need to say to fandom about Daredevil

1. Law school is a form of graduate school. Law is not an undergraduate degree. Law students live in campus housing sometimes but generally don't. That scene with Matt and Foggy meeting as roommates for the first time? That is not two twenty-five-year-old dudes in law school. That is eighteen-year-old college freshmen.

2. Matt cannot see. He is blind. What he does with his other senses is not seeing. Yes, he gets around in the world as well as a sighted person, but that does not mean that he can "see." Furthermore, Matt can get around the world really well without the help of his super senses. Do you not see him checking where doorframes are with his hands and counting church pews with his hands and trailing his fingers down the refrigerator door to find the handle? That's not a show he puts on for sighted people because I can guarantee that Karen and Foggy are not expecting him to do those things. Half the time they're not even facing him when he does it. Using the super senses takes focus and concentration; he says that in canon. I'm sure he's not using them all the time to do everything, anymore than Usain Bolt sprints everywhere just because he has the ability to run fast.

3. Also, note to self: Dear self, what do you think kink memes are for? 15,000 word of PG-rated rare pair het? No, no that is not what they are for. But if you insist on writing a 15,000 word fill, it's okay not to post it right fucking now. Why don't you sit on it for a weekend and decide if it needs editing, hm?
Wait, they were supposed to be in law school during those scenes? I thought it was pre-law. But that was probably my rational brain cleaning up tv logic.

ETA: Oh wait, I can read, I can comprehend. Doh!

Btw I am much excite about your forthcoming fic!!!! :D

I am not 'self'. However: I shall point at 'And Baby Make Eight' which is 30K of PG-rated rarepair het kidfic and say that this is TOTALLY WHAT KINKMEMES ARE FOR.

(But yes, sitting on it for a weekend is not a bad idea. :D)

That's what I've always thought about Matt and what he does with his other senses.
THANK YOU YES. Both of those things have been really bothering me in Daredevil fic.
I feel I should point out that if the writer is foreign, they might not know law is a postgraduate degree in the US. You can do law as an undergrad in the UK. Some of the people I lived with in halls in first year were studying law.

You know though? I really should check
out more Daredevil stuff. I enjoyed that show so much.
A law degree is also undergrad in Australia... (and NZ and South Africa, I am pretty sure). Obviously not in the US, where the show is set, but just to emphaise your point of a non-US writer maybe not knowing this.
A great part of what made me love the show as much as I do is how well-portrayed blindness is. Someone who is blind doesn't need superpowers to get around. I really enjoy the normalcy of it, how mundane it is. He has a system, but it's not pointed out. It just happens. I really hope that he never develops the sonar he has in the comics. Cause that would just take so much away.
I haven't really delved much into the DD fandom yet (simply because I'm taking my time watching the show, so I haven't seen all 13 eps yet), but one of the things I've really been enjoying is how real the show has portrayed Matt's blindness and all the tips and tricks he employs to take note of his surroundings.
I love the fact that, for all his other senses give him, Matt is still blind. He's been sad more than once in the comics that he can't see the color of the sky, the color of pretty dress the person he loves is wearing, that he'll never see the color of their hair, etc. His blindness is a part of him but it has never, ever held him back.

Matt has always been one of my favorite superheroes. :)
Yeah, I always just assumed that Matt and Foggy were at Columbia for undergrad, and being Matt and Foggy, had good enough LSAT/GPA numbers to stay on at the law school for postgrad? (Having once upon a time been pre-law & dorkily fond of researching university programs, I'm also pretty sure that Columbia College might actually have the BA/JD joint degree program for some of the more hardcore undergrads? I know Barnard did, at least!)
