uhura: can't handle me

What are you reading now?
The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls - I'm only about fifty pages in, but this book is just as instantly absorbing as everything else Jeannette Walls has written. The story is about two adolescent girls who are abandonded by their mother, so they take the bus cross country to some distant relatives in Virginia. The jacket summary sounds a little melodramatic, but I think the two main characters are going to be real enough to make up for that.

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Adichie is one of my all-time favorite authors, so I'm probably a little biased, but I really enjoyed this thick novel about the love life of a Nigerian immigrant to the United States. I do think it could have been about 100 pages shorter, and sometimes the main character is hard to like. I can see why some people might not enjoy the book as much as I did, but I'm still hoping some of you will read it. The real pleasure of Americanah, like all of Adichie's books, is the chance to debate about all the characters. Is Ifemelu too judgmental? Was she a fool to break up with her rich, hot boyfriend? Should she have handled the pressures of long distance love differently? I keep debating these things with myself, but it would be more fun to discuss them with one of you!

The Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar by Suzanne Joinson -- The only reason that I could like this book at all is that I've been to Kashgar and traveled the same route through China that the main characters took. If I hadn't, I don't think I could have handled the book's awkward transitions between the historical story line and the modern-day one. Recommended only if you also have a special interest in the remote nether regions of China.

What will you read next?
I'm not sure. I have How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia and Crazy Rich Asians sampled on my iPad. Both of those are satires by Asian authors, and I'd like to get more international reading in this year. I'm not sure I'm in the mood for satire though.
I was rather disappointed by Silver Star. I felt the ending just ended. Tell us what you think after you finish it.
