spock: keep calm and carry on

I missed the deadline for Avengers BB. It was a deliberate choice. I could have finished a draft in time, but I could tell such hasty writing would do a disservice to a story that I really like and want to be proud of. I'm kind of sad but kind of not since I think the story will get read even without being part of the challenge.

My Rare Pair recipient has not chosen to acknowledge my story. This would upset me no matter what the event, but I find it particularly sucky for an event like Rare Pair fest. In a fest like that, you're inherently asking for a story that will have a limited audience, so we're all relying on our recipients to give us squee. That story was hard to write, and I'd like a thank you!

I don't think I've written a word since I turned my Rare Pair story in last week. I have ideas for my avengersfest and deeply_horrible fics, but I have very little inclination to write at the moment. School takes up a lot of my creative energy, and my favorite free time activity is currently travel research. My mother said she wanted to go to Europe before she dies (not like that's going to happen anytime soon) but that she despaired of having the opportunity, so I told her we should pick some destinations, make a budget, and start saving. Even if we don't get to go for several years, I think we will if we have a plan.

Grilled Potato Packets
You need:
-2 medium sized potatoes, thinly sliced (I used Russets)
-1 scallion, finely chopped (white and green parts)
-1 fat clove of garlic, finely chopped
-1 tbsp. soy sauce
-2 tbsp. butter
-Freshly ground black paper to taste
-2 big pieces of foil

Cut 1 tbsp. of the butter into cubes and scatter them over the bottom half of one of the foil pieces. Mound one of the sliced potatoes on top of the butter, and sprinkle them with half the garlic, scallions, and soy sauce. Grind black pepper over them. Fold up the foil, crimping the edges to create a tight seal. Prepare grill for indirect grilling and heat to medium-high. Cook the packets for about 30 minutes. Open the packets very carefully to avoid steam burns.

Beef Sate with Coriander
You need:
-1 lb. ground beef
-2 scallions, minced
-1 garlic clove, minced
-1 tsp. sea salt
-1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
-3 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
-4 tsp. ground coriander (divided)
-1/3 c. molasses
-1/3 c. soy sauce

In a food processor, combine the beef, scallions, garlic, salt, pepper, parsley, and 2 tsp. of the coriander. Pulse until the ingredients are evenly mixed. Using about 3 tbsp. of the mixture at a time, form little footballs about 3 inches long and 3/4 in. wide. (The recipe said to put them on skewers, but I found that they fell apart when I tried to turn them. They held together better when I grabbed individual patties with my tongs.) Combine molasses, soy sauce, and remaining 2 tsp. coriander in a small bowl. Pre-heat grill to high. Grill patties for 2 minutes on each side, then brush all over with the molasses mixture. Grill 1-2 minutes longer on each side, or until the glaze becomes brown and crisp.

What's going on with you guys?
Oooh, the potato recipe looks awesome.

My rare pair fest story went over reasonably well, but it's not a super-popular fandom, so it's only getting a moderate amount of hits. I'll be happy for reveals, though.

I did do that thing where I slapped together 80% of a draft for the marvel_bang, but I'm totally okay with that.

I should start saving for a Europe trip. I haven't been in . . . five and a half years, and never with Mr. Bamboo.
I will definitely read the story from what you've said about it on here.

And that sucks about the rare pair fest! I hope your recipient just hasn't been online or something similar, and isn't actually that thoughtless. :(
Oooh, the potato packets are totally going on my to-do list. Nom nom nom... :D

Man, the rarepair fest lack of acknowledgement sucks so much. Hopefully they've just been offline for whatever reasons and will come through at a later date?

As a reader, I like and dislike big bangs both for the overwhelming glut of stories all at once (have to spread out reading anyway) and for stories that start out promising and then were obviously hastily finished. Glad to hear yours won't end up with that fate. Best wishes for finishing your Avenger big bang story, I look forward to reading it whenever you're done. :-)
Ugh x a billion for no acknowledgment from your recipient. That's the worst thing in fandom exchanges for me and so disappointing. And, like you said, so much worse in a rare pair setting. I'm still not over getting ignored by my springtime gen recipient last year, especially when I saw how active she was all over everywhere else. I hope yours is just an honest mistake, which is easier to understand but still no fun.

I'm glad you didn't rush the end of a story you like so much. That's a theme in a lot of big bangs and always a disappointment.

I hope you and your mom figure out a great European vacation! That sounds amazing and like such a good idea.

Also, those potatoes have to happen ... soon. *drools* Do you think I could bake the packets, as I am not allowed to have a grill at my apartment?
