Another end of year meme, and an HP prompt

I have a prompt at deatheaterfest! I'm not sure if it's meant to be a sekrit since the posting is anonymous, but then the rules didn't say I couldn't share my prompt, and none of my flist overlaps so...

Lucius/Narcissa: “If women believed in their husbands they would be a good deal happier - and also a good deal more foolish.” -- Henry Louis Mencken

I am excited because I think Narcissa will be a neat character to explore, but also a little heartbroken because the prompt I really, really wanted was already claimed. It was about Snape protecting Parvati Patil from a lustful Death Eater while not revealing that he was Dumbledore's man, and it was one of those stories that had already started writing itself in my mind. I know there are probably ways I could modify this scenario, but I was very, very attached to that specific one. Maybe if it is still haunting me after I finish my where_no_woman story, I will just write it and post it under flock so that I do not step on anyone's toes.

Your main fandom of the year?
Star Trek, of course!

Your favourite film watched this year?
I really enjoyed Waltz with Bashir, an animated film based on a graphic novel by an Israeli soldier trying to recover his memories from the Lebanese civil war. I admired the way that it forced me to sympathize with people who had done seemingly inhuman things, and ask myself lots of questions about moral culpability.

Your favourite book read this year?
Fire by Kristin Cashore is a YA book, but it had absolutely wonderful female characters and a very interesting supporting male cast as well. I liked that so much that I even forgave the weird subplots at the end.

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
I listened to Janelle Monae's new album a lot.

Your favourite TV show of the year?
Top Chef. Always Top Chef.

Your favourite LJ community of the year?
where_no_woman, of course! I wish other fandoms had communities like it.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Rediscovering my Harry Potter love has been fun.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Torchwood fandom. I want to love this fandom so badly; not only does the show have all kinds of excellent female characters, it represents sexuality in a positive way and contains a real queer relationship. But the wank...I cannot even fathom it. There is an anti-Gwen alliance now, and people say they want to choke fans who dare to like Gwen Cooper. It makes me feel afraid to read posts or stories outside a very small selected group of friends. And posting my own stories or meta? No thanks. I will continue writing them here probably, but I doubt I will be finding comms to post them in.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Anthony Bourdain.

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Padma Lakshmi, or if I am feeling more realistic, Gail Simmons.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The first challenge of Top Chef All-Stars.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Sometimes I miss Buffy even though I was never really involved in the fandom there.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Harry Potter! I think it will be perfect for me because there are lots of underused but interesting female characters to explore.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
New Torchwood and the final HP film.
I had a very bizarre dream featuring you and Anthony Bourdain and some very strange cookery several nights ago. Just for the record. :D
Ooh! I really hope I got to have sex with him in your dream. Although it would seem a bit unfair if other people got to have sex dreams about me and Anthony...
There was (thankfully -- having sex dreams about other people would be weird) not a trace of remembered sexiness, though there was a problem that could only be solved with moar foods, which I also don't remember?
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Torchwood fandom.

I so hear you, and I am so sorry. Everything you describe is why me-in-2009 didn't get into Torchwood fandom.

I need to find you the story dsudis wrote about Gwen taking leadership of Torchwood from Jack (it's really awesome, he salutes her at the end). Or really all her Torchwood stuff.

PS I totally think you should write that story and post it, say, a month after the Fest ends, saying "inspired by this prompt from this fest, So and So wrote X excellent story from the same prompt for the fest".

Like I said, I just can't fathom the wank, and it's even possible that it's worse since you've been there. I mean, ST generates its share of wank as well, but I've never seen threats of physical harm to Uhura fans. The really sad thing is that the fandom has made me hate Jack/Ianto as a ship when their relationship was actually pretty important to me as a queer person. Hopefully S4 will renew my love.

I am really not sure what the fannish etiquette of prompt poaching is. I think I will write the story if it's still on my mind, then check to see if the original writer either defaulted or wrote something very different from mine. If our stories are similar, I think I might stick to flock. I definitely do not want to generate a bunch of wank in a fandom where people don't even know me.
Write it anyway; if someone has a problem with it then they need to remember that this is a prompt fest, no one's life is at stake, and also to stop taking everything so srsly.
