My second Yuletide default in two years...

I went ahead and clicked the default button today. There are lots of reason for this.

1. Sleepy Hollow is pretty fucking unbearable this season.
2. I don't want to write a story about Ichabod being possessed by demons.
3. It wasn't fun to try and write a story that I know my recipient didn't really want.
4. There are lots of things I *do* want to write right now, and I didn't see why I should make myself miserable when I know people actually fight over YT pinch hits.

Once upon a time, I used to love the way exchanges forced me to stretch my writing muscles. The Journey of a Thousand Miles was written for the most hideous fic exchange request I have ever received, and it is without question one of the best stories I've ever written. Logic Demands That You Take Off That Ridiculous Hat, Get Naked, and Come to Bed was also written for a prompt that was way outside my taste and comfort zone, and it is also one of my most popular stories ever. Lately, though, hand me a prompt I don't like, and I freeze up before crapping out some last minute turd of a story that nobody actually likes. I don't know what changed.

Anyway, I think I've learned my lesson about Yuletide. My first impulse was not to sign up and to write treats for some prompts that fit my skills, and I should have stuck with it. I am much, much better off with exchanges that have some theme I can get behind, or at least the ones where I can tailor my sign-ups enough to land a request I can actually write.
Thank you for posting about this. I decided to default as well, for different reasons. You're right, people fight over the pinch hits and there is no reason to worry about your recipient or get stressed over this. I liked my assignment and I can always try to write it as a New Year's story.
