spock: keep calm and carry on

Productivity

I met all of my writing goals this week! I finished and posted the Winona/George bread pudding story on Tuesday, posted my first Torchwood story last night, and finished up my story about Sulu and swords this morning. I also decided that the Gaila/Uhura and the Pike/Number One story left in my WIP folder should be cannibalized for scraps, and that maybe I should finish the Breakfast Club AU I started about this time last year. Hrm.

All of this leaves me with absolutely no excuse but to work on my big bang, but the words are just not coming. I am so excited about the idea of it, but the actual writing is proving problematic. Maybe I will have to set myself daily goals or somesuch. What I really want to do is start a story about Sulu dealing with the news that his on-again off-again shoreleave girlfriend is unexpectedly pregnant with his child. I have *a lot* of headcanon for Sulu, and it's time to start getting it out!

Posting the Torchwood story was not quite as nerve wracking as I thought it would be. Reading how other people get involved in new fandoms was fascinating, even though I failed to acknowledge comments on that post. The approach that worked best for me was joyeuses': finding a drabble comm and writing snapshots of the characters' lives. Except I couldn't find a drabble comm I liked, so I just browsed where_no_woman's prompts till I found something I liked. Nobody drabbles as well as us! I have some prompts picked out for other characters too. Maybe what's holding me back from my big bang is feeling like I need to do more work with the TW characters first. I have thus far resisted the urge to imbibe huge quantities of TW fic because I'm afraid that I'll see my ideas have all been done and get discouraged, but I do need to start building some familiarity with the fannish communities over there. If I'm going to write the stories, even if they are mostly short interior monologues, I ought to post them somewhere.
Hiya! :D

Well, you can never go wrong with posting at torch_wood, and it'll get you into the newsletter so people are used to seeing your name. Plus, depending on what you intend to write, you may be looking at a wide open field. There's a bit of Gwen 'fic, and a much smaller amount of Tosh 'fic, but the rest of the female cast is almost a blank in terms of what's been done with them. Regarding the male characters, people generally like seeing new takes on old tropes.

You're going to do just fine. :)
Thanks for the support! Actually posting my two little TW ficlets is my goal for next week. That's kind of dispiriting about the female characters, but then, I suppose it's kind of par for the course for most of fandom. But I guess it's good to know that if I write about them, it might be stuff people haven't read before!
